The Road to The Jennifer Show

Welcome to my journey to The Jennifer Show being held this year in Aurora Colorado, in September. It's essentially 3 months away, and I'm going to try like hell to get as many customs, props and things in order to make this the "Destination Show" to remember. There are lots of things to still prep, paint, sculpt and build!

So what is The Jennifer Show and what the heck do you mean by "Destination Show?"
First let me explain what a destination show is, it's an event that usually features a lot of attractive opportunities for a model horse hobbyist in terms of competition, judges, prizes, activities and it's located in a place that has non hobby activities to offer. It could be equestrian, urban, outdoor, or shopping available beyond the show hall. This also helps the victims err.. I mean friends or family you travel with you who might want to do something other than sit around the show hall.
Destination shows are usually more than a single day, but that isn't always the case. Other destination shows like Breyerfest, are several days, and is held at the beautiful Kentucky Horse Park. It attracts hundreds of hobbyists, collectors, and horse enthusiasts. They have shows, live horse demos, exclusive sale items, exclusive raffle items, an Artisan Hall (Much like an Artist Alley at a Con), even additional shows (Resin Futurity, Breakables Live), hotel room sales, workshops and even a 5K.

So now you have an idea of what destination show's offer, lets talk about The Jennifer Show, and why I'm super excited to finally get to one of these big shows in the model horse hobby. This show is unique for me in a lot of ways versus your local or regional shows. This show in particular highlights the areas in which I tend to focus on, Artist Resins, Customs, and Performance. That means no original finish classes, collectability or china.
The bonus side of not having a billion classes and divisions to keep track of, is I will get more time to enjoy the show, the people, and take lots of photos. There's also no limit to your entries - This doesn't mean I'm going to abuse that rule (except in the Spanish classes), but as someone who paints their own collection it's nice to be able to put more than 2 or 3 out on the table.
Speaking of brevity, the performance division is also more streamline, as co-creator of The Jennifer Show, Jennifer Buxton put it in her blog it leaves everyone exhausted by the end of the day. That's no fun, so they've tightened up the performance division. And yes I too will miss the fun costume class, but that still doesn't mean I'm not going to bring a fun costume! I'm also taking some advice and trying to find ways to show the horses I do have tack for in as much as I can, or possibly create my all around performance horse! Ha ha..I can dream. (refer back to the top horse image)
As a painter I'm stoked at a few things this show has to offer, in terms of divisions, not only is there a separation between the big guys (classic scale or larger), minis (little bit to stablemate), but sweet zombie Jesus they have a Micro division! I'm sure with the popularity that Maggie Bennett's monthly micro mini's (I love all of mine) have and the other great sculptors who are also dabbling in doing mini and micro versions of their popular larger scale sculpts more and more shows might follow suit. But how AWESOME is that! Like a whole army of micros! Now I really have to finish prepping and painting these tiny tiny things... I may be blind by September.
Another bonus item to being your own painter is the spectacular judges who will be here. Look at this judge line up they have posted on the site:

I believe Tracy Calamar has captured my facial expression to a T. Whaaaaa! Look at those names, the talent, you bet I'll be pestering them on what I can do to fix and improve. I'll pick their brains about techniques, tools, and if they take time payments lol. Two of which are in my backyard (so to speak) - Hi Barb, Hi Melanie! I'm also going to get a chance to meet up with some of my Region 3 buddies like Lauren a.k.a. Brooklyn, Sommer, and Marilyn. I will even have goodies for them!
So many more things to shout at the mountains about how cool this show is, and if you are debating about pulling the trigger and coming...Do it. I'm as broke as a joke, but I'm going to work and save, and pinch every penny so I can get there in 3 months. You only live once, this IS the show for artists and for collectors, and the competition and judges are what make this a great challenge for all.
